Mehl Custom Boards specializes in retro surfboards. This includes eggs, hybrids, classic longboards, noseriders, bonzers, and fishes. We also incorporate new ideas with retro shapes to create a whole new ride with that classic feel to it. New materials can also provide extra strength, durability, and less weight that was not previously achievable on original boards from these eras. Mehl Custom Boards also does in-house glassing to create that perfect board for you. We can do pigments, tints, cut laps, volan glass, acid washes, pinlines, gloss coats and more.
My Love For Waves
I am a Santa Barbarian and have lived in this area for twenty years. I have been surfing for twelve of those years. I also sail, bodysurf, mat surf, mountain bike, skateboard, and snowboard. I choose to make retro-surfboards because I feel they bring more to the table than your average machine-shaped, paper thin, tri-fin. There is a time and a place for standard tri-fin thrusters but around the Santa Barbara area that time doesn’t come all that often, at least for me.
Retro-Mania Love
For this reason I started riding classic longboards and was instantly hooked. From then on, I wanted to ride more classic shapes so I got into riding fishes. These boards were so fun I had to try other shapes from past eras and before I knew it, I was addicted. This addiction led me to shaping and having to surf almost everyday. For me these retro boards had a lot of soul in them and I wanted to be like the original pilots and shape one myself. This then led to another addiction, shaping.
